Peter Watson of the New England Rugby Referees Society (NERRS) will lead a USA Rugby Level 1 Officiating Course this Saturday at Mitchell College in New London, CT.
Registration close tomorrow and there are some on-line prerequisites to complete prior to the course so don't delay if you'd like to get in on this opportunity.
You can register and find out what prerequisites to take on the USA Rugby website here.
Once you complete the prerequisites, email Peter Watson (Peter.Watson@mailgw.com) and Robby Cripps (rcrips@usarugby.org).

Course description

The Level 1 Referee Course is the basic course.  It covers the referee’s priorities, provides an introduction to the Laws, and examines scrums, ruck/mauls, tackles, lineouts, offside, and advantage with focus on the critical parts and how to referee them.  When a student has completed this course, and the accompanying test, they are ready to begin refereeing safely.  This is just the first step in a referee’s education, but it is the necessary beginning.

The course will consist of a little classroom work in the morning, but for the most part we will be on a field or in a gym doing practical exercises.  Please dress appropriately and be prepared for some mild physical activity.

The course takes about seven to eight hours to complete.  The cost is $60 for the course.  There is no additional fee to become certified, although you must be CIPP registered as a referee.  The New England Rugby Referees Society will reimburse the course fee to any students who become active referees in New England taking assignments for the Society.

Dress

Please wear something appropriate for light exercise.  Most likely we will be in a gym as the weather does not look promising.  This course is very hands on and you will be blowing the whistle while actively refereeing simulated action.

Lunch

There will be a break for lunch a bit after noon.  There is a nearby place to buy salad, pizza, etc.  Students should bring $10 for lunch.  Water and Powerbars will be available throughout the day.
