New England U-19s win...
New England U-19s win Potomac Challenge Cup
The New England U-19 Men's team went 4 - 0 to win the 2009 Potomac Challenge Cup at Founders' Field in Pittsburgh, PA. Saturday's wins included 14 - 7 vs. Minnesota, and 31 - 5 vs. EPRU. Sunday saw the team get past PRU, 24 - 5, to set them up for the final against MetNY. (NERFU beat MetNY in 2008 for 3rd place.) Despite the low score, play went up and down the pitch in a defensive struggle that saw the teams even at 5 at the end of regulation time. In the single 5 minute extra period, MetNY touched down and converted to go ahead 12 - 5 with slightly more than 2 minutes remaining. Almost at the end of the period, New England stole a MetNY lineout, and, with quick ball through the hands, touched down to give them a chance to tie. The conversion was good, sending the game to kicks at goal. New England out-kicked MetNY for the win.

7th Annual Bull Moose Rock...
7th Annual Bull Moose Rock Pile
Lads and Ladies:
On behalf of everyone associated with the still rebuilding Bull Moose RFC I want to say thanks for a great weekend at the 7th Annual Rock Pile Tournament. The new format of 4 matches per team was a challenge but ultimately produced what I think was some of the best social rugby we have ever had at the tournament...a great mix of teams and lots of rugby commaraderie....thanks also for all the help picking up the pitch...it was the easiest clean up we have ever had.
One aplogy due to all women's sides....we thought we were making the right decision by putting the 7's competition on the smallest field, but in hindsight you all were too far out of the mix on field 4.....next year we will have special 7's field in the middle of all the action.
Thanks again to everyone.
Cheers Stu and the Bull Moose RFC

NRU College All Stars named
The Northeast Rugby Union has named a 24-man touring squad for the 2009 National Collegiate Men’s All-Star 15 Championships in Glendale, CO. The team, captained by returning centre Duran Vota (Boston RSL), consists of players from 14 different clubs.
”With tremendous help from the LAUs, the NRU program implemented a new year-round player identification and fitness testing system to increase the number and quality of participants and maintain interest in a higher level of competition,” said Head Coach Mike Hodgins. “We had several players targeted in the fall for our spring training camps and completed the roster with selections from a highly competitive NRU Cup in Albany (NY) which had great showings from all three LAUs.”
The NRU Warriors head to Colorado after strong matches against Old Blue D-1, Brigend College (Wales) and the Rochester Aardvarks. The Northeast is scheduled to compete against the South in their first game on Thursday, June 11.

Mystic River Youth Rugby
Mystic River Youth Rugby
For the past three years Mystic River has run a Summer Youth Rugby Program. The program is primarily aimed at introducing local children to rugby, and to provide them and their parents a greater understanding of the sport. A non-contact version of the game called American Flag Rugby is played which is similar to Flag Football.
This version of rugby is designed specifically for the American child; no experience necessary, fully inclusive, and with a level of structure and discipline that Americans have come to expect from recreational sports. In this game, kids play a version of rugby where the defense removes the ball carrier’s Velcro flag instead of creating a tackle situation.
Coaches are required to complete the Rookie Rugby certification program provided by USA Rugby. We plan to have a ratio of at least 1 coach per 8 kids. The children range in age from 6-14, and the program is open to both boys and girls. Each participant will receive a Mystic Youth Rugby jersey.
This is all about children having fun and running with a ball. The major reason for local program success to date is that it’s fun! Unlike some sports that kids participate in, American Flag Rugby gets every child actively involved. This is wildly attractive to kids who previously spent long days in an outfield or goal box. Everyone touches the ball in rugby and everyone can score points, kids of all ages can play together and skills required are inclusive of a wide range of athletic abilities.
**Sign ups and parent informational meeting will be held at 7pm June 16 at Pine Banks Park. Please contact us with any questions. For more information please visit www.mysticrugby.com or email dave.rudzinsky@hologic.com
Thanks!
